‘Outstanding’ – Tavernier reveals aspects of Rangers draw v Celtic that had him blown away

Rangers defender James Tavernier has revealed that he was blown away with his side’s “outstanding” efforts in both attack and defence in the 0-0 draw with Celtic at Parkhead on Saturday.

The Gers dominated for long spells against Brendan Rodgers’ side and were unlucky to only come away with a single point against their bitter rivals despite being in control.

Celtic keeper Craig Gordon kept his side in the game with a number of crucial stops – including one from Tavernier – to deny the Gers a goal.

The Ibrox right-back admitted that Rangers have set a “benchmark” in the 0-0 draw and need to do everything to maintain that level of performance.

“We have set good standards and want to keep to them.” Tavernier said, as quoted by STV.

“The lads set a benchmark today and we can’t drop from that.

“I thought defensively and offensively we were outstanding.

“We dominated great spells of that game.

“We have to keep driving ourselves on.”

The result leaves the Gers in third place in the Scottish Premiership going into the winter break but will surely give Murty’s side a much needed morale boost after a recent run of poor form.

The Gers now head to the United States for warm weather training before facing Atletico Mineiro and Corinthians in the Florida Cup.

Tavernier has made 121 appearances for the Ibrox side since signing from Wigan Athletic in 2015 and has lifted the Scottish Championship and Scottish Challenge Cup.

The 26-year-old former Wigan and Newcastle star is under contract with the Ibrox giants until May 2019.
