‘New sell out clause – £20m’ – Rangers fans blown away by fringe player display v Celtic
Rangers defender David Bates was an early replacement for Bruno Alves in Saturday’s Old Firm clash at Celtic Park – and the 21-year-old defender blew Gers fans away with his performance against Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Portuguese veteran Alves only lasted 17 minutes before succumbing to a calf injury with the former Raith Rovers defender taking his place at the heart of the Gers defence alongside Danny Wilson.
Despite being thrown into such a high-profile game, Bates coped fantastically and even picked up the man of the match award from broadcaster Sky.
Gers fans were stunned by the defender’s display with one calling him the “Ginger Maldini.”
Here are some of their comments on social media:
Bates joined the Gers on a six-month development loan at the start of last season before agreeing a permanent deal in January this year.
After a string of injuries the defender made his first-team debut last season and has been on the fringes of the side so far this season.
The 21-year-old also picked up the man of the match award in the Gers’ win away to Aberdeen at Pittodrie recently as he tries to earn an extended contract before his current deal ends in May 2018.
