Rangers injury bombshell: Mark Allen has no option but to splash cash on this area of squad
COMMENT
Rangers striker Kenny Miller’s hamstring injury picked up against Hibernian last week must force the Ibrox club’s director of football Mark Allen into action in the January transfer window.
In a devastating bombshell for Miller, the Gers confirmed that the striker faces a “significant” spell on the sidelines on their official Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon, meaning that he could be out for the season with no timescale set as of yet.
Miller’s long-term absence leaves only Josh Windass, Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera as recognised first-team attackers and leaves Rangers short on bodies going into the second-half of the Scottish Premiership campaign.
While Miller hasn’t been the most effective player in a blue jersey for long spells this season, he has been a feature in the starting XI for much of the season.
Windass’ patchy, at best, form leaves serious question marks over his ability to consistently lead the line for the Gers while Herrera has been reduced to three-minute substitute appearances on a regular basis.
That only leaves Morelos as a consistent goal-threat and – despite Rangers’ season being written off in many quarters – must surely be reason to bring in reinforcements in January.
The Gers’ lack of a full-time manager will make it a little more tricky but the three-week gap afforded by the SPFL’s winter shutdown gives the Light Blues a little bit of breathing space in the short-term.
With the Gers still only five points off leaders Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, replacing Miller could just be the difference between Celtic winning a seventh successive title and Rangers finally getting their hands back on the Premiership trophy in May.
