Rangers must offer new deal to striker after devastating injury blow
COMMENT
Kenny Miller’s hamstring injury could be enough to end the veteran striker’s career at Ibrox but Rangers should look to find a way to keep the veteran around at the club’s Auchenhowie training base if it does prove to be final curtain on a long career.
At 37-years-of-age and out of contract in the summer, Miller was always looking at his career coming to an end in the near-future but the fact it may come to an end because of a ruptured hamstring sustained at Hibernian will be particularly galling for the former Scotland striker.
Over the last 12 months Miller has been involved with the club’s Under-20s side as he works towards his coaching badges for when the time comes and he does hang up his boots.
During his time with the club’s youths, Miller has shown a natural aptitude for coaching and working with young players and should be something the club look to take advantage of.
With a number of former players working in th club’s Academy at various levels such as Brian Gilmour, Stephen Wright and Peter Lovenkrands, the addition of Miller would bring something a bit different to the set-up.
Miller picked up invaluable experience in a playing career that took him from the lower divisions of the Scottish league to a place in Scottish football’s Hall of Fame via Turkey, the Premier League, Major League Soccer, stints on both sides of the Old Firm divide before one last go around the block at Ibrox.
That kind of experience is exactly what Rangers should want passed on to the groups coming through the club’s Academy and should see the Gers present Miller with a deal to be a part of the coaching staff if he’s reached the end of the road as a player.
