Rangers must start clearing the decks at Ibrox ahead of Gerrard arrival

COMMENT

Steven Gerrard will take the reins at Ibrox on Friday as he begins his managerial role – but the Gers need to get a move on with clearing much of the deadwood in the Gers’ squad.

As many as fifteen players could be on the way out of Ibrox this summer but so far there has been little movement ahead of Gerrard’s arrival.

The Light Blues are almost certain to have to clear a sizeable number of players before they can really kick on with their recruitment as Gerrard inherits an already massively bloated squad.

Players like Harry Forrester and Joe Dodoo must be on borrowed time at Ibrox after spending much of last season away on loan and it is impossible to see how they can ever force their way back into the side.

Clearing out much of the dross left in the squad after Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha’s failed reigns has to be a priority for Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen as they look to get the Ibrox giants in a position to challenge bitter rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next term.

Getting rid of the guys who have no future at Ibrox will also give Gerrard a chance to really add some genuine quality to the squad with the massive amount of wages that could be freed up this summer.

While the Gers’ haven’t let the grass grow under their feet so far when it comes to bringing players in, they have been slow in moving on the huge number of players who have no chance of featuring for Gerrard’s side next season.
