After signing PL attacker, Rangers must sort this problem area in January window
COMMENT
Rangers finally managed to get a deal over the line to bring attacker Jamie Murphy to Ibrox from Premier League new boys Brighton – and now Graeme Murty needs to look at shoring up his defence in the January window.
With Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso and Lee Hodson all looking like heading through the exit door this month – and captain Lee Wallace possibly suffering a further injury set-back – it leaves the Gers short on bodies defensively.
Youngster Aidan Wilson has travelled with the first-team squad to their training camp in Florida which could see him, Danny Wilson, Ross McCrorie and David Bates as the club’s recognised first-team central defenders.
Scotland and Norwich defender Russell Martin is one possible option for Murty and director of football Mark Allen should they succeed in clearing the decks at Ibrox.
Even if the Gers can bring Martin in, there’s still a need for reinforcements defensively with a back-up right-back one area that needs looked at by the Gers hierarchy.
The Gers have looked better defensively this season than they have in recent years but are still prone to the odd moment where it’s difficult to understand what’s going on in the Gers back four.
If Murty and Allen can land a defender of similar level of ability as Jamie Murphy, it could prove to be one of the better transfer windows for the Ibrox giants in a long, long time.
In latest Rangers news, Gers fans have blasted the Ibrox board for their handling of Murphy’s transfer.
