Rangers must make decision on senior man future ASAP or risk losing him
COMMENT
Rangers fans will still be licking their wounds after the 3-2 Old Firm defeat in the Scottish Premiership put an end to their title hopes but, despite the defeat to Celtic, the Gers need to make a decision on Graeme Murty’s future as soon as possible or risk losing him.
Murty’s side were unlucky to lose to their city rivals and were twice in the lead before Odsonne Edouard’s late strike sealed the three points for Celtic – but the Gers boss has impressed since taking over in October from Pedro Caixinha.
There can be little doubt that the Gers are a much better side than the one senior man Murty inherited from Caixinha and – without some terrible defending – could have been sitting only three points behind their bitter rivals.
The former Reading captain still has a long way to go before he’s the finished article as a manager but his stint in charge will definitely have piqued the interest of chairmen north and south of the border.
Whatever happens with Murty in the summer, it is unlikely he’ll go back to his old role as Under-20’s head coach after getting a real taste of managing the first-team and doing his reputation no harm in the process.
With a host of new clubs likely to be looking for new managers before too long, the Gers board need to make a decision on who will be in the hotseat long-term or risk losing one of the only viable candidates around.
In other Rangers news, the club are firmly in the running to sign a goal machine from north-west English high flyers.
