Rangers news: ‘I’m sure’ talks underway after Ibrox source’s ‘massive’ Calvin Bassey reveal – McLeish

Alex McLeish has suggested Rangers may have already opened talks with Calvin Bassey and his agent over a new contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers manager insisted the Light Blues will want to reward the 22-year-old for his “standout” performances this season.

An Ibrox source told Football Insider on Saturday (21 May) that Rangers are preparing to offer Bassey a “massive” pay hike.

The defender’s current terms, signed when he joined in 2020, run until 2024.

McLeish insisted Bassey is well-deserving of a new deal after his performances “on a world stage.”

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You can do a contract within a contract. I’m sure Rangers will have addressed that with Calvin and his agent.

“Calvin’s been a standout. Sometimes in the opening games, he looked a little bit tentative.

“I saw him when he misjudged a passback but got away with it. He’s grown and grown with confidence.

“He’s left-footed, he can play all down the left side as a wing-back or a full-back and as a left-sided centre-back. He is a very sought after person.

“With performances like this on a world stage, that speaks volumes.”

Rangers took advantage of cross-border rules to sign Bassey from Leicester for the nominal fee of just £300,000.

The Glasgow giants are prepared to offer the defender a deal that would move him into the top bracket of earners at Ibrox.

He has played 65 times for Rangers to date, with one goal and six assists under his belt.

Of those appearances, 50 have come this season, 14 of which came in the Gers’ run to the Europa League final.
