Rangers news: McLeish makes withering Van Bronckhorst claim after Auchenhowie plan revealed

Alex McLeish has insisted Giovanni van Bronckhorst is ‘just ticking boxes” at Rangers after discussing his plans to look at bringing through academy products.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 46-year-old’s primary focus at Ibrox must be the senior side.

As quoted by the Daily Record (November 22nd), Van Bronckhorst insisted he “loves working with young talent” and will give any promising stars an opportunity in his Rangers team.

Nathan Patterson is the standout talent at Rangers at present, with the defender already boasting six Scotland caps at just 20 years old.

McLeish insisted Van Bronckhorst will look to establish his footballing philosophy rather than promoting youth this season.

“He’s just ticking the boxes at the moment for Rangers,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“Of course, he will say he’s not going to ignore the academy right now, but he’s not going be launching himself into a full-depth study of it.

“At the moment, his priority will be with that first team. The first thing he has to do is get that Rangers side winning again, get those good performance levels in the style he wants to play.

“Once he establishes that he then can ascertain these players’ strengths and weaknesses in the coming weeks.”
