Tavernier reveals big Rangers ambitions after confirming new deal
Rangers defender James Tavernier signed a new three-and-a-half year deal at Ibrox on Wednesday, putting to bed speculation of a move away from the club.
News of an improved contract with the Gers was announced on the club’s official website and Twitter feed and, after putting pen to paper, the right-back revealed his goals for the future.
Tavernier took the captain’s armband for the Scottish Cup victory over Ayr United at the weekend and the vocal defender has revealed he would like to take the club captaincy one day.
Lee Wallace currently holds that position at Ibrox but speaking in The Scottish Sun Tavernier said: “I knew deep down I wanted to stay here because I have some unfinished business.
“I have always been a vocal player on and off the pitch – you will always hear me.
“It was an honour for me and my family to captain the side against Ayr.”
The Bradford born star also stated that one of the reasons he chose to stay north of the border was because he felt he has “unfinished business” with the Gers.
Since joining the Light Blues in the summer of 2015, the former Wigan Athletic player has made the right-back slot his own and this campaign has been one of the best of his career.
Graeme Murty and supporters have been keen to see the 26-year-old commit to the club, particularly with the six goals and six assists he has to his name from defence in 32 games this season.
His goal against Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premier League a little over a week ago was typical of what he has been producing all season – marauding forward with a powerful shot to finish.
And Tavs will hope that a win against Hamilton Academical on Sunday will top off a good week for the player.
