Rangers should hijack reported move for 22-y/o midfielder from Premiership rivals

COMMENT

One player who should be under consideration for the impending Steven Gerrard Rangers revolution is the highly-rated Barnsley midfielder Stevie Mallan.

The 22-year-old, who has struggled for game time at the now League One side, is looking to revitalise his career after a poor spell down south, and Gerrard could be just the man to do that.

He originally made his name at St Mirren, but since then he has struggled to live up to his potential, despite being only at the start of his career.

There are a host of clubs reportedly interested in the player, with the Daily Record reporting that Hibernian are keen to buy him and the Daily Record live transfer blog (8:01am) reporting that Shrewsbury, Luton and Coventry all want to sign him,

None of those clubs might exactly be ‘glamorous’, but the Gers have wasted far too much money on big name players in the past, and they need a Scottish spine to their team.

Allan McGregor has returned to be the goalkeeper, and Mallan – alongside Ryan Jack, for example – could be a sold midfield.

Mallan most plays in central midfield but is also capable of playing further forward, and players like that are worth their weight in gold.

The likes of Sean Goss have failed to make the grade in the Gers midfield in recent times – Mallan certainaly deserves a chance.
