Rangers should jump at chance to end midfielder deal after agent comments
COMMENT
Rangers midfielder Carlos Pena’s agent has suggested they are looking to bring the 28-year-old’s Gers contract to an end two years early – and the Light Blues should jump at the chance, but only once he has completed his stint in rehab.
According to the Daily Record, Salvador Necochea will hold talks with the Gers over Pena’s future in an attempt to “resolve” his future and it would be best for everyone to have a clean break and go their separate ways.
Pena returned to Mexico at the start of the year when he signed a year-long loan deal with Cruz Azul but his since checked him into a clinic run by boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez in a bid to overcome problems with alcohol.
Despite a fairly hefty outlay on Pena, the Gers aren’t likely to get any return on their spending as Pena tries to get his life back on track in his homeland.
As Pena undergoes treatment, the Gers should give the Mexican every possible bit of support that is needed to help him recover and get back to playing football and once the former international is back healthy and able to focus on playing again then it would be best to look at ripping his deal up and calling it quits.
After only managing 14 appearances during his time in Scotland – and never looking particularly fit at any point – as well as the fact he’s one of the highest earners at the club but has failed to make any sort of meaningful impact on the side, means it should be a no-brainer to look to get rid of him.
Pena came to Scotland with a good pedigree and showed some flashes that there is a quality player in there, but there just doesn’t seem to be a set of circumstances that can make the move work for him.
Incoming Gers manager Steven Gerrard is also going to have his own views on who he wants to fill certain roles within his side and trying to shoe-horn Pena in there doesn’t make much sense.
