Sean Goss delivers verdict on Gerrard appointment at Rangers

Rangers midfielder Sean Goss has admitted that it is “massive” for everyone at Ibrox that Steven Gerrard has been named as the club’s new manager – and revealed it has given all the players a lift after a difficult week which saw manager Graeme Murty sacked after the 5-0 thrashing by Celtic last Sunday.

Gerrard was announced as the Gers new boss on a four-year deal on Friday and will take up his new post on June 1st as the 37-year-old takes his first steps in management.

Goss admitted that the players are doing “everything they can” to impress in the final few games and start off on the right foot under the 114-times capped England star when he arrives at Ibrox next month.

“It’s massive for everyone at the football club, and it’s big for Scottish football as well for someone with his experience in football to be coming here, it’s definitely given everyone a lift,” Goss said, as quoted by the Gers’ official website.

“The boys are trying to do everything they can between now and the end of the season to start next season afresh, and in a good position.”

Football insider verdict

For any of the players at the club just now, getting to play under someone with the profile of Steven Gerrard would be absolutely huge. The added focus on the club outside of Scotland will now also make the Gers a more attractive proposition for players linked with moves to Ibrox. The excitement level amongst fans is as high as it has been in a long, long time and the appointment of Gerrard could prove to be a watershed moment for the Ibrox giants. Although Goss’ current loan deal is due to end just as Gerrard arrives at Ibrox, the midfielder could find himself making a swift return to Ibrox if he has impressed director of football Mark Allen during his time north of the border. Despite not playing regularly, Goss has shown some flashes of quality although the new manager may have wildly different ideas about who he wants to bring to the club in the summer.

In other Rangers news, both the Gers and Celtic are in the running to sign this £100,000-a-week Premier League midfielder who will be available in the summer.
