Rangers star James Tavernier agrees terms after ‘astronomical’ offer – sources
Rangers captain James Tavernier has been offered an “astronomical” package by Al-Ettifaq to reunite with Steven Gerrard this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Gerrard’s interest in bringing Tavernier to Saudi Arabia has heightened over recent weeks, with Football Insider revealing [17 June] a “big Saudi bid” is expected to arrive at Ibrox for the 32-year-old.
The package in question is believed to “massively” increase Tavernier’s wages from his current pay rate in Glasgow, and the Gers skipper has accepted the contract offer.
As it stands, even though personal terms are agreed, there is no agreement in place between Rangers and Al-Ettifaq, who finished sixth in the Saudi Pro League in Gerrard’s debut season – but a deal is increasingly likely to be finalised. This would bring to an end Tavernier’s association with the club after nine years.
The right-back, who scored 24 goals in 58 Light Blues games last season, is currently under contract until 2026.
Rangers likely to lose Tavernier to Saudi Arabia
With Tavernier seemingly creeping closer to the exit door at Ibrox, many Rangers fans are supportive of the move in the belief that it is time for a new chapter.
Philippe Clement and the Gers recruitment team are in the process of a demanding squad rebuild in a bid to wrestle the Scottish Premiership title back from Celtic, and have made five signings including Mohammed Diomande, whose loan was made permanent.
Six players have departed Ibrox if outgoing loanee Fabio Silva is included, and Tavernier could soon be the latest, with an agreement between the two clubs set to be the catalyst for a switch to happen quickly.

Football Insider reported on 26 June of how fans’ esteem is beginning to dwindle in Tavernier, alongside teammate Connor Goldson who has also been linked with Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq.
It may be considered the best option for all parties for the skipper to move on, with the likelihood of a new contract rapidly declining and Rangers looking to scoop a fee for an experienced player with two years left on his existing deal.
In other news, Rangers have entered discussions over a move for Kenny McLean.
