Rangers told to sign ‘next Allan McGregor’ after confirmed news – pundit
Noel Whelan has urged Rangers to sign the next Allan McGregor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker said the club “need to find a replacement” for the 40-year-old.
On Monday (20 June), Rangers announced that McGregor had put pen to paper on a new one-year deal at Ibrox.
The veteran shot-stopper’s previous contract expired at the end of May.
Speaking to club media, Giovanni van Bronckhorst said McGregor brings “invaluable experience” to his side both on and off the field.
When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the news, Whelan said: “Goalkeepers can play well into their 40s.
“If they keep themselves fit, there is no reason why they can’t.
“It’s key to have that desire to play as well. That is the biggest part of it, having that desire to play, that love of the game and working hard in training. I think he will do. He seems a very professional player.
“At some point Rangers need to find a replacement though. It is about longevity. They need to find the player that is going to be the next McGregor. The goalkeeper who will be there for the next four seasons or longer.

“I think the manager and the chairman will have sat down and decided that McGregor has a lot more to offer next season.
“Rangers could still buy another goalkeeper though. McGregor could help a new goalkeeper settle into that number one role.”
