Rangers TV pundit suggests Lundstram struggling at Auchenhowie after major ‘setback’

Alan Hutton has suggested John Lundstram has struggled to impress in training since Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s arrival at Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit admitted the change of manager has been a “setback” for the 27-year-old.

The summer signing has played just five minutes in two substitute appearances since Van Bronckhorst’s arrival.

He had been a mainstay under Steven Gerrard, missing just two of the Gers’ opening 13 league matches.

Hutton suggested Lundstram has not “hit the levels” expected of him at Auchenhowie.

Discussing the impact a change of manager can have on players, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’ll definitely be a setback to certain people.

“This is what happens, everybody gets a clean slate, start from the beginning. You have to go and prove yourself to the manager.

“Whether there are other people within that squad that have just done that better than the likes on Lundstram, Bacuna, these sort of guys, then that’s how he sees it at this moment in time.

“It’s up to the players to grasp the opportunity whenever they’re given it. Whether it be in training or training games or first-team games, if it’s five or ten minutes, you have to go and show what you’re capable of doing.

“Give everything for the manager. As soon as he sees that, you have to grasp it. That’s what it’s all about as a football player.

“He can only give you an opportunity but you need to take it. Maybe he’s not hitting the levels that Van Bronckhorst wants at this moment in time. He’s going to have to show it soon.”

Rangers

Lundstram has played 20 times since arriving at Ibrox.

Speaking back in September, Gerrard called the midfielder an “absolute powerhouse” and a “fantastic player”.

In other news, pundit claims ‘new Goldson’ may already be in Rangers ranks as talks underway.
