Leeds will offer Raphinha bumper contract and signings promise amid Liverpool dossier reveal – Whelan
Noel Whelan has tipped Leeds United to hand Raphinha a new and improved contract to ward off rival suitors.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker suggested a new deal would prove the Brazilian’s importance at Elland Road.
Football Insider first broke the news of Liverpool’s interest in Raphinha on 6th February and a recruitment source has said they are continuing to scout him and are compiling an extensive dossier.
Raphinha only joined Leeds last summer for a reported £17million-plus from Rennes.
However, he has quickly established himself as a key member of the Whites’ starting XI and one of the most wanted Premier League attacking talents.
With transfer interest growing, Whelan suggested a new deal would help the attacker feel valued at Elland Road.
However, he insisted the contract would have to be followed up by ambitious and exciting signings this summer.
Asked if he thought Leeds could hand Raphinha a new deal, Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Oh yeah. I think whatever it takes to keep a player happy at a football club.
“Whether that’s money or new signings. Both, probably, I would expect. To reward a player of that ability with a new contract more money shows how much he’s worth to the club.
“But then obviously go out in the summer and strengthen with players that are going to enhance his game and take Leeds further up the table. Big players and big stars want success at football clubs.
“To do that, we’re gonna have to invest and he is an investment. So more money to him means keeping him happy. Then he’s a happy player who’s going to play better for Leeds United.”
Raphinha has started 23 times in 27 league appearances this season, with six goals and seven assists under his belt.
Marcelo Bielsa also has the likes of Jack Harrison, Ian Poveda and Helder Costa to call on as wingers.
In other news, Leeds United have been tipped to make “unexpected” £20million-plus midfield signing.
