Report: Benitez closes in on Newcastle speed machine loan swoop – top flight talks imminent
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is hoping to close in on a loan swoop for Chelsea winger Kenedy after seeing his signing fail to go through last week, according to a report.
The Norther Echo claim on their website that the Spanish boss believed that a deal for the 21-year-old speed machine was set to be completed prior to the 1-1 draw at home against Swansea, but that Blues manager Antonio Conte refused to sign off on the deal without reinforcements arriving at Stamford Bridge.
The report states that the north east side have revisited a move for the Brazilian after failing in their pursuits during the summer, but without seeing cover for Marcus Alonso signed prior to the closing of the winter window, Conte is unwilling to sanction his departure.
Talks between Benitez and the Italian are said to continue during the next week, although the Newcastle boss is reportedly losing faith in securing the youngster’s signing, despite him having only made four appearances for Chelsea this season.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle fans will be frustrated but perhaps not surprised at news that a move for Kenedy is at risk of falling through. The Magpies have suffered a disastrous time in the transfer window recently, and halfway through the current market they are yet to see a single name through the door at St James’ Park. While Benitez would no doubt be looking for permanent signings, he has resigned himself to securing some temporary deals to bolster the squad. However, he cannot even secure loan moves, whether it be down to finances or an unwillingness from the selling club. Kenedy would have been an exciting addition to the Newcastle side but if there is any risk of a deal not coming through, the club need to be looking elsewhere in what is becoming a desperate attempt to secure some signings.
In other Newcastle United news, a Sky Sports pundit has described a Magpies duo as “shocking” after their performance against Swansea.
