Report details major Tottenham setback as Premier League reject proposal
By Derek Smithson
The Premier League have rejected Tottenham’s wishes to reduce the dimensions of the Wembley pitch next season, according to a report.
The Times claim that Spurs have held discussions as to whether they can replicate the size of the pitch at the national stadium to match White Hart Lane.
It is understood that the north London club want to make the changes following their temporary switch to Wembley next year while their new ground is being developed.
The report details that in a meeting with 20 Premier League chairmen that amendments to the pitch size will not be permitted to match White Hart Lane.
Spurs’ high pressing style was so effective at White Hart Lane last season and helped them finished unbeaten in the league.
They played on a 100meters x 67meters pitch at their old prestigious ground and became a real force under Mauricio Pochettino.
However, they will now have to adjust to a 105m x 69m at Wembley, where they will play all of their home games next season.
Spurs could ask to trim the pitch by one metre as that would still adhere to the new pitch guidelines, but they will be unable to recreate the size of their former ground.
Spurs used Wembley during their European campaign and struggled to assert their quality at the ground, winning just one of their four matches.
Pochettino’s side also suffered a 4-2 defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final at the 90,000-seater and will need to break their poor form at the national stadium if they want to compete for silverware next season.
