£20,000-a-week Rangers player on verge of exit after seven-figure fee agreed – report
Cruz Azul will pay all of Carlos Pena’s wages while on loan in Mexico and have agreed to fork out a seven-figure fee worth £2million to make the move permanent in the summer, according to a report.
The Daily Record claims the Mexico City-based side will cover the entirety of Pena’s £20,000-a-week wages as part of the deal which is on the verge of being completed in the next few days.
It is understood that the 27-year-old is due to put pen to paper on a season-long loan deal with former Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha’s new side and reunite with the man who brought him to Scotland last June.
Since arriving at the Gers from Chivas Guadalajara, Pena has scored five times in 14 appearances but has struggled to get up to speed with Scottish football and has often looked completely out of place as games pass him by.
Pena was filmed arriving in Mexico by Cruz Azul ahead of undergoing a medical with the Liga MX side.
Football Insider verdict
Getting 100% of Pena’s wages covered is a good bit of business for the Gers and if they can recoup almost the entire transfer fee spent to bring the 27-year-old to Scotland then it is another step in the right direction. The Mexican has no future at Ibrox so getting as much back as possible while moving the player on with minimal fuss should allow the Light Blues to strengthen the squad this month. With more names expected to follow Pena out of the exit door, manager Graeme Murty and director of football Mark Allen might get a bit more money to work with than expected.
