Report hands Leeds six-figure windfall following Wolves clash – more funds incoming
Leeds United will have picked up £640,000 from their televised Championship games this season following their clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday, according to a report.
Local news outlet Leeds Live claim that the Whites will be handed the six-figure windfall from their games which have been broadcast live on Sky Sports throughout the campaign, with the match against the league leaders also being made available to fans.
The base fee is said to fluctuate depending on what day the fixture lands, and whether the team is home or away, with a visiting side receiving £10,000 while a home club will be handed a minimum of £100,000, more if it is on a Sunday or in midweek.
With away visits against both Fulham and Aston Villa scheduled to be shown live on Sky Sports throughout April, the Whites can expect there to be more money coming their way.
Football Insider verdict
While the six-figure sum might seem a lot to your average reader, in terms of footballing means it is merely a drop in the ocean. The funds will help boost the club’s hopes in the transfer window, but only marginally. It demonstrates the gulf in funds between the Championship and the Premier League, with top flight sides earning approximately £1.2million per game televised on Sky, showing just what promotion can mean to a second tier club. If Leeds want to get their hands on the big money, they need to be performing much better to be in with a chance of a play-off spot, which in itself does not guarantee any meaningful funds.
