Leeds United favourite Paul Robinson has joked about returning to Elland Road and playing against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday night after joining Twitter.

The former Tottenham and England goalkeeper arrived on the social networking platform on Tuesday to a barrage of requests for him to come out of retirement, having hung up his gloves last summer, and step back between the sticks in place of Felix Wiedwald, who has come under fire from much of the Leeds faithful for his performances of late.

However, he reluctantly admitted he could not turn out for the Whites on his Twitter account, thanking the supporters for trying to get him back to the club.

Robinson made 108 appearances for Leeds after breaking through their youth academy, becoming a favourite among the fans, before he left Elland Road to join Spurs, while he also picked up 41 caps for England.

Football Insider verdict

What Leeds fans would do for someone of Robinson’s calibre between the sticks right now. Wiedwald has had a mixed bag of a season but his recent performances warrant the reaction from the supporters, who recognise just how much an issue the goalkeeping situation is right now. None of the options at Paul Heckingbottom’s disposal look up to the challenge of pushing for a play off spot, and there will still be questions asked over why Rob Green was let go last summer. Experience of the Championship is crucial if they do move for a new shot stopper in summer, but finding the right player could be a challenge.
