Report: Newcastle eyeing move for Bundesliga ace, Benitez previously signed him in 2007

By Derek Smithson

Newcastle are eyeing a move for RB Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, according to a report.

ESPN FC claim that Rafael Benitez is keen to add a world-class goalkeeper to his squad this summer and is considering the 27-year-old from the Bundesliga.

It is understood that the Magpies have turned their attention to the Hungary international after their target Joe Hart completed a loan move to West Ham from Manchester City.

The report details that Benitez is a long-term admirer of Gulacsi and he signed him as a teenager in 2007 during his time with Liverpool.

Gulacsi never made a senior appearance for Liverpool, but has found success since his exit from England.

The shot stopper won league titles in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg and has recently impressed with German outfit Leipzig.

He played an important role last season in helping them secure a shock second-placed finish in the Bundesliga, which has seen them earn a place in the Champions League for the first time in their brief history.

Gulacsi made 34 appearances across all competitions during the last campaign and kept an impressive nine clean sheets in return.

Football Insider verdict:

Karl Darlow looks set to begin the season at St James’ Park as the number one and Newcastle do have several goalkeeping options in their squad. However, it makes sense that they may still be keen to improve the key position and Benitez has already made a couple of decent signings in the window. Gulacsi would be a superb addition if the Magpies secured his signature as he is developing into a great player. The 27-year-old is now entering the peak of his career and may have a point to prove in England after failing to make the breakthrough at Liverpool. Gulacsi played a big role in Leipzig’s success last season and has proven himself in Germany’s top flight.

In other Newcastle transfer news, they are keen on a 26-year-old Championship midfielder.
