Why reported Rangers fall-out spells beginning of the end for Warburton
COMMENT By Will Butcher
Frank McParland’s possibly imminent departure from Rangers leaves manager Mark Warburton in a perilous position.
It is no exaggeration to say it spells the beginning of the end for his Ibrox tenure.
Head of recruitment McParland, who worked with Warburton during their time together at Championship outfit Brentford before they joined forces again in Scotland, is reportedly looking to quit amid boardroom disappointment at a series of wretched signings.
The Sun claim that McParland is set to leave the 54-time Scottish champions following a fall-out, which leaves manager Warburton in a very vulnerable position.
McParland is Warburton’s right-hand man, as important as assistant manager David Weir, another former Brentford senior figure.
The former Liverpool talent spotter is said to have become disillusioned in Glasgow as he is given little flexibility in the transfer market in terms of budget.
If McParland does indeed leave, Warburton’s enthusiasm to carry on his job as manager will surely diminish.
Now third in the league, with little money to improve the situation and the Daily Record claim pressure is ramping up on the Londoner, Warburton could beat the Rangers board to it and follow McParland in jumping ship.
The pressure on the manager, 54, is already intense after just two wins in the Gers’ last six games and the gap between the club and Celtic way out of control.
But Warburton may now be tempted to leave the hotseat himself as pressure continues to mount. It might just save him some face.
