Revealed: £171m West Ham player transfer news confirmed

West Ham currently owes £171million to other clubs in the form of transfer instalments, Football Insider can reveal.

The Hammers released their 2022/23 accounts on Friday (29 December) revealing the club’s annual revenue at £237million with a net loss of £18.3million.

That figure places West Ham seventh in the Premier League when it comes to total income with only the ‘Big Six’ clubs earning more.

However, West Ham’s accounts also showed that they have £171million in transfer payables as of 31 May 2023.

The Irons spent heavily in recent transfer windows, with a club-record £183.9million invested into the men’s first team during the summer of 2022.

That transfer window included the £51million signing of Lucas Paqueta from Lyon and the £30million acquisition of Nayef Aguerd.

Overall, the club brought in nine new players with the costs likely to be spread over multiple years of their contracts.

Part of the £171million figure will also be made up of instalments on players signed in previous transfer windows.

With the January transfer window now open, senior figures at the London Stadium may be hesitant to add to their transfer debt.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Hammers have identified two striker targets to strengthen their squad in January.

However, West Ham’s transfer debt can be largely covered by the £105million fee paid by Arsenal for Declan Rice.

Rice’s transfer fee has not been included in West Ham’s 2022/23 finances as the deal was completed past the 31 May cut-off date, but it will have provided a significant boost to the club’s finances and transfer budget.
