Revealed: Andy Robertson’s chances of January exit amid Liverpool contract concerns

Andy Robertson is still no closer to signing a new contract as Arne Slot considers what to do with the Anfield servant.

During the summer, Robertson was tipped for a move to Atletico Madrid after the signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

Yet, Slot opted to keep the defender at the club with Liverpool set to rotate between Kerkez and Robertson across the season.

Despite sources telling Football Insider that Liverpool wanted to explore a new contract for Robertson, little progress has been made with his current deal set to expire in June 2026.

Andy Robertson has ‘no chance’ of leaving in January despite stall in contract negotiations

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Reds are keen to hold on to the Scotland captain in the upcoming January transfer window.

The number 26 continues to battle with Kerkez at left-back yet his experience and leadership will be crucial in helping Liverpool win the Premier League title once again.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “I think probably later in the season things will become more clear on what’s going to happen with Andy Robertson’s future.

“There’s no chance of [him] moving [in] January, Liverpool won’t allow that to happen, [they] won’t think they’ll then [not] need Andy Robertson around.

“They’re pretty short of options at the back anyway. Look, Andy Robertson might even have to fit in at centre-back on occasion this season with Liverpool’s injury concerns in that area of the team.

“Although he’s maybe not a guaranteed starter these days, he still has a role to play for Arne Slot’s team.

“His experience will be invaluable for Liverpool between now and the end of the season and he is vice captain there as well, so, that shows how much Arne Slot rates him as well.”

Ibrahima Konate’s new deal a pressing matter that Liverpool must prioritise

Given the defensive woes at the back for the Reds, they cannot afford to let any more defenders depart from the club.

Sources told Football Insider that Liverpool are increasing their efforts to tie Ibrahima Konate to a new contract.

The Frenchman’s current deal expires at the end of the season, just like Robertson, and his impending free agent status has caught the attention of Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are on the lookout for an affordable but high quality centre-back to come into the team as Xabi Alonso continues their vital rebuild.

Slot will be desperate to keep the France international at Anfield with injuries piling up at the back.
