Rhodes on Sheffield Wednesday move: This is what really happened on deadline day

By Will Butcher

Jordan Rhodes has revealed that his deadline-day move to Sheffield Wednesday was only confirmed after a last-minute meeting between top-ranking Football League chiefs.

The 26-year-old goal machine opted to leave Middlesbrough after a difficult stay on Teesside, joining Wednesday’s promotion charge on loan with a view to a permanent £10million deal.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ EFL Weekly programme, Rhodes revealed that the move was so late, the Football League had to have a meeting the day after the transfer window to ratify his move to Hillsborough.

Although delighted to secure a move, Rhodes will be sick of deadline-day transfers after moving to Boro from Blackburn on February 1 2016. And he says he’ll be happy not to do it again.

“It’s frantic,” Rhodes said on Sky Sports. “Thankfully, it all got done and went over the line. I would’ve had to go back to Middlesbrough if the League didn’t have a meeting on Wednesday but I’m here now.

“It’s been a whirlwhind of a week. Two last-minute deadline day windows in a row, I’m not up for that next time round. Would much rather be on the sofa with a cup of tea.

“It kicked off two or three days beforehand, it was all very last minute.”

Wearing the number 17 shirt, Rhodes made his Wednesday debut last Friday and got his first assist in the 1-0 away win against Wigan.

He is likely to start against Birmingham at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Fans will be hoping that their new striker can rediscover the goalscoring form that earned him a move to Middlesbrough in the first place.

Playing for Blackburn he scored 21 goals in 2014-15, 25 goals the season before and 30 goals in 2012/13.

If Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal can reignite his lethal touch, his team can solidify their place in the play-off spots.

Currently sitting in sixth, Wednesday are five points off Leeds in fifth, and 12 away from the automatic promotion places.
