Robin Olsen: Pundit appalled as Man City issue statement – ‘what on earth is going on?’
Paul Robinson is appalled by the scenes at Man City on Sunday after Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen was attacked by a fan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one called on the authorities to take action as a “worrying” and “unacceptable” trend emerges.
As shown on Sky News (23 May), Olsen was attacked by a Man City fan during a pitch invasion at the Etihad.
In a statement (22 May), Man City issued an apology to the Villa goalkeeper and revealed an investigation into the incident has been launched.
The individual will be issued with an indefinite stadium ban once identified.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the controversy, Robinson said: “What on earth is going on in this country?
“Why do fans think they can go on the pitch and abuse opposition players?
“I understand the euphoria of winning the league and the fans running on the pitch and celebrating. But to abuse opposition players and managers is inexcusable. Something has to be done about it.
“There is no fences now, thank goodness. There is a lot more women and children going to games but there is a worrying trend. It is unacceptable. The authorities have to do something about it.
“Wembley Stadium has a great system. They have wires that are retractable. It is something that needs to be looked at.

“If these idiots are going to keep on doing it they have to bring measures in. The idiots that are caught doing it need lifetime bans and prison sentences.
“It is pure stupidity and negligence. We don’t want to go back to the 70s and 80s.”
In other news, Jack Grealish’s pal has issued an emphatic claim amid ‘big’ Man City prediction.
