Robinson ‘can’t put into words’ how ‘amazing’ McGregor is at Rangers

Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Allan McGregor after Rangers maintained their unbeaten run with a draw at Celtic Park.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and Leeds United goalkeeper said it is “amazing” that McGregor is still playing at an elite level at the the age of 39.

McGregor produced a phenomenal display on Sunday, as Steven Gerrard’s side made it 33 games unbeaten in the league this season with a 1-1 draw in the Old Firm derby.

Robinson, who is friends with and a former teammate of Gers boss Gerrard, believes McGregor is playing the best football of his entire career.

“It is incredibly difficult to play on as long as he has,” he told Football Insider.

“As a goalkeeper, your body is put through a lot physically. It takes a lot of impact from the times you go to ground and that is every day in training as well as in matches. It gets harder as you get older.

“I managed to keep playing until I was 37 and it was really tough. Little niggles turn into bigger injuries so I cannot put into words how amazing an achievement it is to still be playing at the age of nearly 40.

“He is playing the best football of his career as well. He had some indifferent days down at Hull and I think he lost his way at times.

“Where he is now and what he has achieved is a credit to himself and his profession. He is playing the best football of his career at 40.”

Rangers

Football Insider revealed earlier this month that McGregor is planning to sign a new contract at Ibrox that will keep him at the club beyond his 40th birthday.

His current deal expires at the end of the season.
