Robinson hails ‘phenomenal’ update on Targett’s situation at Aston Villa

Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Aston Villa defender Matt Targett and claimed he is “fully deserving” of a new contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one tipped the 25-year-old to “get better and better” after the “best season” of his career.

The Athletic report that the club are in talks with the in-form full-back over a new deal, with his current contract due to expire in 2023.

Targett has been ever-present for Dean Smith’s side in the Premier League this season.

His performances have helped Villa keep an impressive 14 clean sheets this term – only Manchester City and Chelsea have kept more.

When asked by Football Insider if the left-back deserved a new deal, Robinson said:

“Targett has had a phenomenal season and he is full deserving of a new contract.

“He has been playing in a team that has done really well this season and he has been a big part of that.

“It has definitely been his best season and I think he is just going to get better and better because he’s still relatively young.

“It is more than justified for Villa to give him a new contract.”

Jack Grealish, John McGinn, Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa have all put pen to paper on new deals at Villa Park in the last 12 months.

The club hope Targett will be the next senior player to follow.

In other news, Aston Villa are braced to receive a massive offer for one of their most important players with Man United interested.
