Robinson shares dressing room verdict on ‘exceptional’ Heaton heading to Man United

Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton would be a “great acquisition” for Manchester United this summer, according to Paul Robinson.

The 42-times England international, who played with Heaton at Burnley, told Football Insider his former teammate is a “brilliant person to have in your dressing room” as he has an “exceptional mentality”.

Heaton has just over one month left on his contract at Villa Park and is expected to leave on a free transfer this summer.

He has struggled for game time under Dean Smith this season due to the sensational form of Emiliano Martinez.

Football Insider understands Heaton has rejected a new contract offer from Villa and has instead verbally agreed to join Manchester United.

The Premier League giants have offered the English shot-stopper a dual role in which he would provide first-team cover as well as help coach the club’s roster of keepers.

Robinson is thrilled by the news and claimed the move works for all parties.

“United would be incredible for him,” he told Football Insider.

“I rate Tom so, so highly. If he was playing week in, week out he would be in the England squad for the Euros. He has just been unlucky that Martinez has come in and done amazingly well.

“Tom is a great goalkeeper with an exceptional mentality and he is a brilliant person to have in your dressing room. He would be a great acquisition for Man United.

“From his point of view, he would get to play European football if De Gea moves on which looks like a possibility. It just seems like a move that works for everybody involved.”
