Robinson slams two ‘terrible’ Tottenham big names as Romero verdict revealed
Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez are not “world-class” and Tottenham must find a better partner for Cristian Romero.
That is the view of former White Hart Lane number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Eric Dier’s performance at Newcastle United.
Spurs won 3-2 at St. James’ Park on Sunday to move up to fifth in the Premier League.
The win looked but a formality until Dier turned into his own goal in the 89th minute.
Nuno Espirito Santo appears to have settled on Romero and Dier as his first choice centre-back pairing.
Robinson slammed the standard of Tottenham’s defending despite the win.
“Spurs have got defensive problems,” he told Football Insider.
“We know certain players are prone to lapses in concentration, Dier and [Davinson] Sanchez.
“Cristian Romero is a world-class centre-half but it has to be one of those two next him. Spurs do not have two world-class centre-backs.
“To concede two against a team like Newcastle is disappointing, especially given the manner of the own goal.
“If they want to compete at the top of the league they need to improve defensively.

“You never know what you are going to get with Spurs, they are a Jekyll and Hyde side. The three clean sheets at the beginning of the season masked over the problems. The Arsenal performance after that was terrible.
“Yes, they got three points at the weekend but it was against a very poor Newcastle side. In all honesty, I don’t know where Spurs are at right now.”
