Robinson suggests real reason behind high-profile Liverpool exits after source’s reveal
Paul Robinson has suggested the limited transfer budget at Liverpool under Fenway Sports Group may be driving the likes of Michael Edwards and Julian Ward away from the club.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the sporting director’s job at Anfield is “extremely difficult” given the finances available.
Julian Ward will leave Liverpool at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.
His exit will come just 12 months after Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s former sporting director, left the club.
The Merseyside club’s director research, Ian Graham, is also leaving.
Sources told Football Insider on Friday (2 December) that the club fear Graham is quitting to potentially join rivals Man United.
The two exits come at a time where the club’s ownership is very uncertain.
FSG made public their desire for new investors last month.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the latest, Robinson said: “If there is no money to spend and recruitment to be done it is a very tough job for a sporting director.

“It is extremely difficult to sign top players and keep Liverpool challenging at the top level on a shoestring budget. Liverpool have to scout top players but on a limited budget.
“The potential sale has brought uncertain times at Liverpool. I do not think there is too much to read into the changes behind the scenes. It is more likely coincidental that it is happening at a time where there could be a takeover of the club.
