Robinson: This is what ‘honest’ Conte told me about Tottenham squad post-Chelsea

Paul Robinson has revealed he spoke “at length” to Tottenham manager Antonio Conte after the Chelsea defeat.

The former White Hart Lane number one exclusively told Football Insider that Conte, 52, said the performance at Stamford Bridge was “the best he can do with that current group of players.”

Spurs were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Chelsea on Sunday to extend their miserable run of form in west London.

As quoted publicly by Football.London (23 January), Conte said his former club “are on another level to us” in his post-match press conference.

Spurs are yet to make any signing in the January transfer window, much to the frustration of Conte.

As revealed by this site (24 January) that the Italian manager is putting “huge pressure” on Daniel Levy and the board to complete four new signings.

Robinson urged the club to back Conte this week.

“I spoke to him at length after the game,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs. “His honesty is refreshing.

“To cut a long story short, he basically told me that is the best he can do with that current group of players. Chelsea are better than Spurs and when they play well, they are too much for us.

“When you look at the two teams you cannot disagree with him.

Tottenham

“Out of the Spurs team, as a Chelsea manager, who would you take out of it? Probably just Harry Kane. You would maybe put Steven Bergwijn in that mix on the evidence of his performance but the you’d struggle to make a case for the other nine to sit on the bench at Chelsea. Look at the strength in depth at Chelsea, it’s amazing.

“Conte is getting the best out of what he’s got but he needs money and he needs support. He needs to be backed and allowed to do his job. If you give the best carpenter the worst tools he will not be able to do his job.”
