Celtic boss Rodgers takes subtle swipe at Rangers ahead of semi-final
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has taken a subtle dig at Rangers ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final, claiming that the Ibrox side will have had the game on their minds for weeks as it was the one ‘they were cheering for’.
The Hoops managers’ pointed comment was in reference to Gers boss Graeme Murty’s revelation, as reported by the Daily Record, that the Ibrox side cheered the draw for the semi-final when it was made last month.
Rodgers feels that the incident could have impacted the thoughts of the Gers players going forward.
“It is probably something etched on Rangers’ minds because this is the game that they were cheering for. For us we always respect every opponent we play and just get ready for the game,” he said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
Rodgers comments will just add to the atmosphere and tension ahead of the match at Hampden, which sees the Hoops’ attempts to win a second consecutive domestic treble on the line.
Football Insider verdict
Celtic fans will love the comments from Rodgers and find them hilarious. They show that he hasn’t forgotten the cheering that the Gers players done, and the Hoops players will be out to put things right and show that the Gers players made a mistake that they won’t repeat again. Rodgers’ comments also add to the nature of the rivalry between the clubs, which is what the game is all about, and no doubt if the Hoops triumph on Sunday their celebrations will be loud and long, and you would expect the exact same reaction from the Ibrox side if they win the match.
