Rodon told to quit Tottenham for mega-rich rivals after insider’s £26m claim – pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Joe Rodon to seal a move out of Tottenham in January amid reported interest from Newcastle United.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 24-year-old needs to be playing regular football for the good of his career.

A Spurs source told Football Insider earlier this month (4 December) Rodon has his heart set on leaving the north Londoners, either on loan or permanently, in pursuit of game time.

Spurs expert John Wenham has told Football Insider that Rodon’s value could double from his £13m joining fee to £26m if he thrives while out on loan.

The Daily Mail reported last week (7 December) Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has identified the Wales international as a potential target.

Whelan suggested it could suit all parties for Rodon to join the mega-rich Saudi-owned club.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think it he’s not required at the club, if Conte’s decided that he’s not for him and they want to look for players he knows will improve the squad, then it’s a good move.

“He’s been lacking game time for quite a while now. You need to be playing.

“If you’re going to be involved in your international setup with Wales, there’s a play-off coming up and I’m sure he wants to be involved, he needs to be playing.

“We know Newcastle’s stats, they say that defensively they’ve been poor for two years now.

“I think he’s at the right age, he’s had that little bit of Premier League experience. If he’s available, then it’s probably not a bad move for Newcastle to go in for somebody like him.

“He’s an international, has the quality, is at a good age. He is somebody that hopefully could stop the rot at Newcastle. It could be a good fit for both.”

Leeds

Rodon has played six times for Spurs this season.

However, only one of those appearances has come during Conte’s time in charge.
