Russell Martin ‘could be sacked’ soon by Southampton – sources
Southampton manager Russell Martin is under growing pressure after a poor start to the season amid a growing sack threat, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the 38-year-old manager’s style of play has become a major issue at the newly promoted Premier League club.
Martin’s commitment to playing out from the back under high-pressure situations has cost the club vital points in their fight to avoid relegation.
It’s understood from sources with knowledge of Southampton’s position that the next few weeks are critical for Martin with the board impressing upon him that he needs to adopt a more pragmatic style of play while in the Premier League.
Pressure mounting on Russell Martin at Southampton
The south Coast club currently sit in 18th after drawing one and losing four of their opening five Premier League games.
Martin’s side were seconds away from picking up their first win of the season against fellow newly promoted side Ipswich Town but Sam Morsey rained on their parade with a 95th minute equaliser.

The club’s struggles aren’t just at the back, they’re also the lowest-scoring side in the Premier League so far this campaign with just two goals.
Southampton are back in action on Monday (September 30) facing the short away trip to Bournemouth in what could be an early six-pointer for Martin.
