Russell Martin in running for Championship job as new manager now favourite to be sacked next

Russell Martin is in the running to become West Brom’s new manager, with Ryan Mason now the favourite to be relieved of his duties next in the Championship.

Martin has been without a job since he was sacked as Rangers boss just 123 days into his tenure on 5 October.

The 39-year-old oversaw just five wins in the 17 games he took charge of the Glasgow giants for, with his replacement Danny Rohl doing a better job since his arrival.

Football Insider revealed last month that Norwich were targeting Martin after Liam Manning was sacked, but fellow former Gers boss Philippe Clement instead won the race for that role.

Martin has been linked with a return to Southampton, as well as the likes of Leicester City and Swansea City, but he could be set to take over at another Championship club soon.

Martin in West Brom running as Ryan Mason now favourite to be next boss sacked in the Championship

West Brom took a gamble when they appointed ex-Tottenham midfielder Mason as their new manager in June, and it has not paid off so far.

The Baggies were planning to stage a promotion push this season, but they sit 16th in the second-tier after 19 games following a 3-1 loss to QPR last time out.

Mason is now the clear favourite among Championship bosses to be sacked next, at 2/1, with Leicester manager Marti Cifuentes and Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen behind him at 7/2 and 4/1 respectively.

Martin, meanwhile, may well find himself in The Hawthorns’ dugout soon, as he is 7/1 to be West Brom’s next manager, joint odds with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and behind Michael Carrick at 7/2 and Carlos Corberan at 5/1.

Martin could be Leicester’s next manager amid Marti Cifuentes uncertainty

Martin boasts a stellar record as a Championship manager, hence the constant links back to the league despite his ill-fated spell at Ibrox.

The ex-Scotland international led Southampton to promotion through the play-offs in 2024, and has won 60 of the 138 games that he has managed in the second-tier up to now.

Leicester manager Cifuentes is under pressure right now as his team also struggle to mount a promotion push, with his job believed to be on the line unless their form rapidly improves.

Martin is one of the frontrunners to be Leicester’s new boss, according to the bookmakers, and so it certainly would not come as a shock to see him appointed by a Championship club very soon.
