Russell Martin sacking: O’Rourke shares Southampton manager update

Southampton boss Russell Martin is in a ‘precarious position’ after yet another disappointing result against Bournemouth, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Southampton’s 3-1 defeat to fellow South Coast club Bournemouth has got ‘alarm bells ringing’ for the 38-year-old.

The performance as well as the eventual result were hugely disappointing, leaving the newly-promoted side without a win in their opening six Premier League games.

It won’t be getting any easier for Martin’s side this weekend and they prepare for an away trip to the Emirates to face an in-form Arsenal side.

Pressure continues to mount on Russell Martin at Southampton

It’s understood that the young coach does have ‘credit in the bank’ with the Southampton board but that will quickly be forgotten if he doesn’t start to pick up results soon.

Martin has been insistent on sticking with his preferred style, playing out from the back, yet the Saints are the lowest scoring side in the Premier League with just three goals in their opening six games.

The south Coast club currently sit in 19th after drawing one and losing five since returning to the Premier League.

Martin’s side were seconds away from picking up their first win of the season against fellow newly promoted side Ipswich Town but Sam Morsey rained on their parade with a 95th minute equaliser.
