Scott Brown reveals why he turned Rangers down to join Celtic

Celtic skipper Scott Brown has revealed why he turned down a move to Rangers to join Celtic.

It’s a move he doesn’t regret one bit after lifting 14 trophies in his 11 years at Parkhead, including seven Premiership titles.

Brown was one of the hottest properties in Scottish football after coming up through the youth set-up at Hibs, before moving to celtic for a reported fee of close to £4.4million in 2007.

That was a huge sum of money at the time – a record between Scottish clubs – but the midfielder has paid it all back and more in his time at Celtic.

And, talking to CelticTV, as quoted by the Scottish Sun, Brown has revealed that it was all down to Gordon Strachan.

“I had a couple of offers to go down to England. I had an offer to go to Rangers and an offer to come to Celtic.

“For me, I sat down with the managers and coaches once the bids were accepted from Hibs.

“I sat down with Gordon and me and Gordon connected really well.

“He believed in me and he wanted to build the team around myself, Aiden (McGeady) and a few of the younger ones that were coming through like Stephen McManus, Darren O’Dea and he was bringing in Scott McDonald as well.

“So I think the trust that he already put in me to sign me and for him to say that I was going to be part of his plans for the next two or three years going down the line, I think that was what was going to be exciting for me.”

Football Insider verdict:

Broony has been the scourge of Rangers over the past decade and it must still cut to the quick when fans hear how close he came to joining Rangers. In the end Celtic fans have Strachan to thank for a player who has given more over the past 10 years than any other.
