‘Strange’ – Sean Dyche responds to Leeds fans treatment of Taylor and Wood

By Richard Parks

Sean Dyche has insisted that he was baffled by the treatment from Leeds United fans of old boys Chris Wood and Charlie Taylor in Burnley’s League Cup defeat on Tuesday night.

Striker Wood and left-back Taylor were subjected to abuse from the visiting supporters before and during the match at Turf Moore.

It came after they made the move from the Championship leaders to the Premier League club this summer, with Wood joining Burnley for £15million and Taylor costing a compensation fee of around £7million.

Clarets manager Dyche claimed the abuse directed at the former Leeds duo was “strange” as he pointed out how “you make £20million for your club and you get slaughtered”.

Taylor played the full 120 minutes of the enthralling encounter, which ended 2-2 after full-time and, with the scores tied following extra-time, was decided in Leeds’ favour by a penalty shoot-out.

Wood, who has made a major impact since joining Burnley at the end of last month, came off the bench to score a last-minute penalty during normal time.

The 25-year-old scored 30 goals in all competitions in 2016-17 but he has spoken of the criticism he received from supporters during his debut campaign, in which he scored 13 goals in 37 appearances.

“I remember my first season at Leeds I was booed for three or four months of the season, I had to overcome that,” Wood said, as quoted by the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

Boyhood Leeds fan Taylor destroyed his relationship with many of the supporters after former manager Garry Monk revealed that he refused to play in the final match of last season with a move to the Premier League pending.
