Sean Longstaff to Wolves: ‘he is the one’ – pundit wowed
Wolves have been backed to land a deal to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff if he is made available in the January transfer window.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, insisted that Wolves could capitalise on Newcastle’s financial concerns to secure a deal.
The Magpies are expected to be limited in their spending unless they can sell players this month as they continue to balance concerns about profit and sustainability rules.
They were forced to sell the likes of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson in the summer to help balance the books, and Longstaff could be the latest name sacrificed to raise funds.
Robinson went on to explain that the 27-year-old is “the type of player Vitor Pereira would relish” given his high work rate and fit in the new boss’ style.
He also backed Longstaff as the ideal option for a club in Wolves’ situation given their struggles in the league in the first half of the season as they look to turn their results around.
Wolves eye move to sign Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff
Football Insider revealed in June that Newcastle were willing to listen to offers for the midfielder to ease their PSR concerns as he would be registered as “pure profit” on their balance sheet.
Now, Robinson has insisted a move to Wolves could be the outcome for the player and both clubs as he would be guaranteed improved playing time while earning the Magpies a profit.
“That might be a PSR situation for Newcastle,” he told Football Insider.
“Other teams will be looking to make the best out of that if they are to sell that type of player.
“He’d be a good solid player and a good addition.
“He’s the type of player you want when the chips are down and you’re in a fight.
“The type of player that Pereira would relish.
“You look at his teams, the way he has set his teams up before and Longstaff’s the exact type of player that would fit the mould of one of his players.

“I can see the link, it might depend on the Newcastle situation but that could be one, since he’s not playing every week, that could work for both the player and the club.”
