Shearer names four Tottenham players in his PL team of the year
Alan Shearer has included four Tottenham players in his Premier League team of the year.
The pundit has found room for defensive trio Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier in his XI, while centre-forward Harry Kane was also included.
Shearer complied his best XI for 2017 and there was a strong Spurs representative after a decent year for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
The north London club finished second in the 2016/17 season with an 86-point tally in the Premier League and are currently seventh in the table during the current campaign.
Chelsea also had four representatives after winning the title last season, with Cesar Azpilicueta, Marcos Alonso, N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard selected.
Meanwhile, Manchester City duo Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva completed the team alongside goalkeeper David De Gea of Manchester United.
Shearer has heaped huge credit onto four of Spurs’ main key players and feel they have been among the outstanding individuals in 2017.
“I’m going for the Tottenham pairing of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld,” he wrote in his column for Coral.
“These two centre halves have been excellent for Spurs and were one of the key reasons why their side had such an excellent defensive record last season.
“My first wing back is Kieran Trippier. He has been a huge plus for Tottenham. And the reason is simple – nobody has said that Spurs have missed Kyle Walker.
“Leading the line it has to be Harry Kane. He has scored more goals than anyone else in the Premier League in 2017.”
Spurs certainly enjoyed a fantastic first half of the year as they pushed Chelsea for the title and showed signs they were on the verge of winning silverware.
However, they have perhaps taken a step back in the second half of the year and the current season is not going to plan as they sit a huge 21 points behind runaway league leaders Man City.
Pochettino’s side face a vital away match on Saturday away to Burnley and need three points to give them a lift ahead of a busy Christmas period.
