Shearer: This Tottenham star set for history books – if he stays at Spurs
By Russell Edge
Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has said that Tottenham’s Harry Kane has everything he needs to go on and break the Premier League goals record.
The current record of 260 was set by Shearer himself during his time with Blackburn and the Magpies, but he believes that his fellow England striker is set to surpass him.
Since breaking into the first team at the North London side, Kane has hit home 82 goals in 122 top flight appearances, while he has picked up the Premier League Golden Boot award for two successive seasons.
Writing in his column for the Sun, Shearer says: “I actually believe Kane, in particular, can do it — and will do it.
“At 24 years old the Tottenham man has 82 goals and has reached that quicker than anyone bar myself.
“With up to another decade left for Kane in the game my record has got to be in his sights.
“I do not see anything that Kane can add to his game to make him better.”
However, the 47-year-old admits that he will only reach such a feat if Tottenham can continue to live up the the striker’s aims.
The club have been involved in the Premier League title race for two seasons in a row, but their form in Europe has been disappointing, and they have not won a domestic trophy since their League Cup victory in 2008.
“The big question going forward is whether the North Londoners can match his own ambitions,” says Shearer.
“They need to keep the impetus going that has been created.
“But they need to keep adding to it, keep improving, keep pushing.
“Spurs are saying they are no longer a selling club. What they need to be, however, is one that wins trophies.”
This season has seen Kane net four times in the league, with a brace against Everton followed by another double against West Ham on Saturday.
He could lead the line for Spurs against Cypriot side Apoel Nicosia on Tuesday, while the club’s next game in the league sees them away at Huddersfield.
