The Republic of Ireland international had the Newcastle fans scratching their heads and wondering whether Benitez had lost the plot, having been part of an Aston Villa side relegated from the Premier League with just 17 points in 2016.
However, the centre back soon turned opinions round by forming a resolute partnership with club captain Jamaal Lascelles at the heart of the defence, and was a key member of the squad which picked up the Championship title, even chipping in with three goals along the way.
His no nonsense attitude and domineering defending has been well appreciated by the Toon Army and although he has had a fight with summer arrival Florian Lejeune for a role in the starting XI during the 2017/18 campaign, has proven that he is of Premier League quality.
As canny a signing as they come.
