Brought to Tyneside after finishing as Crystal Palace’s top scorer for three consecutive seasons, Gayle was handed the famous number nine shirt, and lived up to expectation as he blasted the Magpies towards a Premier League return.
His 23 goals in 32 appearances were pivotal in not only securing promotion but the second tier title, and his impact in the Championship alone makes him worthy of his place on this list.
He has struggled on his return to the top flight, managing to net just five times as injuries played their part, but his impeccable work ethic and poacher’s instinct means he is always a thorn in the side of the Magpies’ opposition.
