Sources: Brentford race Tottenham to sign Djed Spence as talks held

Brentford have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Djed Spence, Football Insider understands.

This site revealed last week (23 May) that Spurs have opened preliminary talks over a deal for Middlesbrough wing-back.

Now a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Brentford have registered their interest in landing Spence, 21, this summer.

The Londoners are in the market for a new right-sided defender capable of operating at wing-back.

Nottingham Forest are also keen to make Spence’s loan move permanent following their promotion to the Premier League on Sunday.

Middlesbrough are hoping for an auction for Spence that could drive his price tag beyond £15million.

His contract at the Riverside Stadium runs until the end of June 2024.

Spence excelled during his loan spell at the City Ground this season.

The right-back contributed three goals and five assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.

Of those appearances, 46 came for Nottingham Forest and four for Middlesbrough.

Spence is an England under-21 international and made his debut as a substitute during a 3-0 victory away to Albania on 29 March.

Tottenham are in the market for a new right wing-back as Antonio Conte looks to bolster his squad ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

Last Tuesday (24 May), Spurs announced £150million of equity had been injected into the club.

A statement said the increased capital would be used to give the club “greater financial flexibility and the ability to further invest on and off the pitch.”
