Sources: Chelsea set to unveil new tactical system with Reece James handed new role

Graham Potter is ready to experiment with a new tactical system at Chelsea after the club’s recent struggles, sources have told Football Insider.

The Blues have mostly utilised a 4-2-3-1 system under the English manager, but it is understood that Potter is preparing to experiment with a 3-4-3 system in future matches.

Potter enjoyed success at Brighton using a similar system and believes that it could work once again at Stamford Bridge.

It is understood that Potter has wanted to transition into a three-at-the-back style previously this season, but faced opposition from veteran defender Thiago Silva who much prefers playing in a back four.

But with Silva now sidelined through injury, Potter is ready to test the new system, with Reece James and Ben Chilwell set to be handed more advanced roles.

Chelsea have hugely struggled for goals under Potter, with the Blues scoring just six times in their last 12 matches.

Potter wants to utilise James and Chilwell as wing-backs and allow them further freedom going forward in the hopes that it will result in better chance creation for Chelsea’s forwards.

The defensive duo only recently returned from the treatment room, with James struggling with a knee injury while Chilwell suffered an injury to his thigh.

James has managed just 16 appearances across all competitions this season, while Chilwell has 19 appearances this campaign.

The English duo are considered key to Potter’s project and could be introduced to their new roles this weekend when Chelsea line up against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.
