Sources: Former Liverpool chief Frank McParland in advanced talks to join Birmingham City

Former Liverpool academy director Frank McParland is in advanced talks to join Birmingham City, sources have told Football Insider.

The Championship club are closing in on the experienced talent spotter and are confident of finalising a deal this week.

It is believed that McParland has been offered the head of recruitment role by Birmingham.

McParland has an impressive CV that includes senior director and recruitment roles at multiple leading clubs.

He was general manager at Bolton Wanderers, chief scout at Watford, director of football at Brentford, Burnley and Nottingham Forest as well as head of recruitment at Rangers.

McParland’s longest stint was at Liverpool, where he spent six years from 2007 to 2013, including the last four as academy director.

His last role in football was with Nottingham Forest, joining the club in 2017 as a director of football before leaving later that year.

After their Saudi Arabia-backed takeover, McParland was on Newcastle United’s shortlist to join the board, although a deal never came to fruition.

The Magpies considered the vastly experienced transfer expert for the vacant director of football role at St James’ Park, although former Brighton director Dan Ashworth instead filled the role in 2022.

At Birmingham, McParland will be tasked with rejuvenating a squad that currently sits 18th in the Championship.

McParland will join a fairly new-look board at St Andrew’s after Birmingham hired Ian Dutton as the club’s managing director this time last year.
