Sources: Leeds United in advanced talks to agree Sam Greenwood deal

Leeds United are in advanced talks to agree a new contract with Sam Greenwood, sources have told Football Insider.

The Yorkshire giants are closing in on an agreement with the striker, 20, as they look to tie him down long-term.

Leeds coaches think highly of Greenwood and believe he has developed impressively since signing from Arsenal in the summer of 2020.

His current contract expires in June 2023.

Greenwood made just one Premier League start during the 2021-22 campaign, playing 85 minutes during Leeds United’s crucial 2-1 win against Brentford on the final day (22 May).

Jesse Marsch handed the attacker five of his six substitute appearances during that season as he registered two assists in the final weeks of the campaign.

Speaking to TalkSPORT on 23 May, Greenwood gave Marsch a rave review, claiming he is an “unbelievable coach” and insisted his positivity “is the best I’ve ever seen”.

The attacking midfielder spent time in Sunderland’s academy before moving to Arsenal in 2018, aged 16.

He then moved to Elland Road on 28 August 2020 and made his senior Leeds debut on 10 January 2021 in the 3–0 FA Cup third round defeat against Crawley Town.

Ex-Whites striker and Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan told this site on 31 May that Greenwood would benefit from a loan move this season though he admitted his former side can’t afford to let him go.

Leeds start their 2022-23 Premier League season at home against Wolves on Saturday (6 August).

The Whites won their final pre-season game against Cagliari 6-2.
